    Plastic surgery holds relevance in modern scenario: Dr Bhatti

    Plastic surgery can be a boon and help people suffering from disfigurement not only from congenital deformities, but also injuries. This was stated by Dr Deepak Bhatti, Professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery at Christian Medical College and Hospital. The hospital is equipped with one of the best burn units of north India.

    Delivering a special lecture at Lions Bhavan on Saturday, Dr Bhatti spoke on 'Plastic surgery: It's realms and social relevance'. He gave details of the treatment of various congenital deformities such as cleft palate which can be surgically corrected, giving the child a normal life. Microsurgery techniques such as reconstruction of injured tissue and re-implantation of amputated body parts help the patient in not only regain his body functions but also get psychological benefits. Dr Bhatti said that in the case of burn injuries, a plastic surgeon plays a crucial role in helping the patient meet the challenges which face both the physician and the patient.

    Dr Bhatti also spoke at length about the aesthetic side of plastic surgery, where it can contribute to the social and psychological well being of a person. He pointed out that actors and models are not the only ones to take help from plastic surgery for career advancement. He added that such surgery was also becoming more relevant in helping boost up a person's self confidence by improving his looks.

    Shedding light on the history of Plastic Surgery, he said, "Plastic surgery is not a new or foreign concept in India. It has been incorporated in the social fabric of our country since times immemorial. Sushruta, who is regarded as the father of plastic surgery by the whole world, started it in 600 BC. Since then, it has grown and been nurtured in India," revealed Dr Bhatti.

    The meeting by presided by KK Bagai, president of the Lion's Club. It was attended by a large number of members of the club.
