Don't like those lines around your mouth or the so-called "marionette lines" on your aging face?

NewsCenter 5's Heather Unruh reported Wednesday that there is a new product called Perlane that has just won Food and Drug Administration approval. Perlane has been used in Europe for a long time. Now, it is the latest filler in the arsenal of local cosmetic dermatologists.

Jean Goldberg, 76, of Newton, hopes to fool Father Time. She is having four vials of the filler injected into some of the prominent lines on the lower part of her face. Dr. Ruth Tedaldi said that volume is the first thing to return when the product is injected. The superficial lines will also come out.

Tedaldi has been using other cosmetic fillers for years, such as collagen and Restylane, to plump skin that deflates with age. Perlane is new to the market. Perlane is another hyaluronic acid.

Tedaldi said it can be used for a deeper, more volume responsive fill. Tedaldi said that is really what aging is all about. Getting ride of volume loss is the goal, according to Tedaldi.

Tedaldi cannot say how long the benefits of Perlane last since it is so new to her practice. But she estimated the skin will stay plumper for about six months like other fillers on the market.

Depending on the dermatologist, each vial of Perlane costs $650 to $900. The average woman in her 40s or 50s would need about two vials to see real results, according Tedaldi.

"I don't see the lines. I had such deep lines. I think it's amazing," Goldberg said.

As for safety, Tedaldi said Perlane is very safe with little reaction -- maybe some swelling just after the injection.
