Medical Council delays cosmetic surgery rules
The Medical Council has delayed issuing its guidelines on who should be allowed to perform cosmetic surgery to hear more submissions.
The council will now meet with representatives of general practitioners, and two doctors representing cosmetic medicine bodies to discuss their concerns, NZ Doctor reported.
Hastings GP Paul Weaver, who will make a submission on behalf of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Medicine, has said the college is concerned the draft guidelines do not specify whether GPs can continue to perform cosmetic procedures that don't involve cutting beneath the skin.
Medical Council chairman John Campbell said the council would make sure that was clear in the final statement.
GPs have also raised concerns about a reduced role in liposuction, which they currently perform.
The Medical Council is looking at whether they need to have two types of liposuction -- low volume and higher volume -- according to Prof Campbell.
Final decisions are likely to be made at the council's October meeting.
